March Athlete of the Month -- Julie Lewis

Julie - I’m 48 years old (49 in July) and found Oceanside CrossFit about 2-1/2 years ago. I am a registered nurse and I am married with two beautiful girls and a loving husband. I started searching for a CrossFit gym after meeting up with a friend from nursing school several years after we had graduated. She had had four kids and I had never seen her look so good! She invited me to her gym for a workout, and I had no idea what to expect. We did a 20 min AMRAP (as many rounds as possible in 20 mins), and when it was over I asked, “Do we do it again?” They all looked at me like I was crazy! I was so use to going to 24 hour fitness, working out for 1-1/2 to 2 hours, and not really seeing any results. I wish I had known then that less is more. After that “complimentary WOD” (workout of the day) with my friend, I quickly realized the next morning why you only do a 20 min AMRAP once!


I searched for CrossFit gyms close to my house and found OCF. I will never forget my first day there. I was scared to death, thinking…..what did I just get myself into? All of the members were so friendly and helpful. I had no idea what I was doing and felt so awkward. I remember one of the members coming up to me and offering his help. Little did I know he was also a coach. “Fish” took me under his wing and got me through that 1st WOD. The first week I was there I felt like I had been hit by a MACK TRUCK! That eventually got better and I fell in love with OCF and its members.


If you ask me what accomplishments that I am most proud of at OCF so far, you might be surprised. It’s not that I can do a pull up or a deadlift or even a jerk (all of which were things I never did before arriving at OCF). It’s the friends I have made and the community to which I belong. OCF has some of the most amazing people that I have ever met. I have made lifelong friends there. We support each other, celebrate each other’s accomplishments, and push each other past our comfort levels. My current short and long term goals are the same… be able to keep doing CrossFit well into my 50’s and 60’s. I’m no spring chicken!!! I only wish that I had found CrossFit years ago!
