June Athlete of the Month - Megan Mehler

Published May 31, 2019

Hi! My name is Megan Mehler, and I am 39 years old. I was born and raised here in San Diego. My husband and I moved up to Oceanside 13 years ago for his job. We have 3 kids, Tyson, almost 16, Marleigh, almost 13 and Colbie 8. Taking care of my kids is my full-time job but I'm able to create, paint and collect vintage and antiques for my Etsy shop on the side. I have recently completed my level 1 yoga certification and have been really enjoying instructing a weekly community yoga class and learning about all of the health benefits that come from proper breathing, stretching, and meditation. I love to travel, camp, hike and basically do any outdoor activities with my friends and family.

I first found myself at OCF almost 3 years ago. I have a really good friend that had been CrossFit-ing for several years and a really cool neighbor that was a member at OCF. They convinced me to give it a try and I've been here at OCF ever since! I was definitely intimidated by the idea of CrossFit, It seemed so intense and the weights so heavy and of course I was unfamiliar with most of the movements. What I did have going for me was my natural love for fitness, I was definitely up for a challenge and I really enjoyed learning all of the lifts (which took some time…) Growing up I played competitive soccer mostly, but volleyball is my favorite sport. One thing that we rarely to almost never did in any of our sports training was use the weight room.

My first few months at OCF were really great, the coaches made sure I had the fundamentals down before I had any real weight on my barbell. They always made sure I had the right scaling options and I always new I could ask them about any questions I had about the workout. My muscles were sore but the combination of the coaches, the encouragement and helpfulness I got from other athletes was all I needed to motivate me to keep coming back.

Getting that first pull-up or first handstand push-up was an amazing feeling, but my favorite thing about OCF is all of the peeps I get to workout with! Day after day, thru soreness and sometimes injury they seem to always be supportive and understanding and of course entertaining. My workout goals moving forward are to just keep moving, getting stronger and learning to listen to my body more.

Thank you OCF for helping me get fitter and stronger because the strength you build in the gym almost always carries over into your life outside of the box and you realize how much more you are able to do and really kick ass and enjoy life to the fullest!
